The High Powered Committee led by Prime Minister was scheduled to take place on 24th May for selecting the new CBI Chief. Usually, in this high-powered committee, Prime Minister's opinion on selecting a new CBI chief is considered to be given weight or light and he is the one who steers the direction of the meeting, and mostly the Government's choices were discussed on the table. However, this tradition witnessed a change this time by Hon'ble Chief Justice of India N.V Ramanana who cited the Supreme Court guidelines for selecting the CBI Chief which said that no officer with less than six months to retirement should be appointed. Now, Chief Justice's emphasis and SC guidelines couldn't be ignored and the guidelines got in effect in the selection meeting. CJI Ramana's citing 'rule of law' gave a big blow to government choices and as a result two frontrunners Modi and Asthana were dropped. Along with CJI Ramana, the leader of opposition Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary agreed with Ramana and supported his arguments during his dissent note. In the 90 minute meeting, it was felt that the Chief Justice of India and Leader of Opposition took the central stage of the meeting which was usually taken by the Prime Minister. Therefore, It can be speculated that since government choices were dropped the central stage was taken by CJI and LoP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi must have felt isolated in the meeting. It has also been largely discussed in the power corridors that this is the second blow to the government after Bengal.
