This is maybe the first time that the Government took so long to decide the fate of the Delhi Police Commissioner, usually, the decision comes in 7-10 days before the retirement of the Police Commissioner. However, Asthana's case becomes a special one because of obvious reasons. Sources say that delay in the decision can be attributed to Asthana's secret battle with the top guns at the very last minute sources say. Some top and well-placed sources went on to say that Asthana was almost on the verge of getting extension of either six months or one year as he reached closer to convincing MHA but a timely intervention of the Prime Minister turned the tables. Sources added that Prime Minister's Office categorically denied any further extension to Asthana. Some were expecting this because if we look closely Prime Minister is very strict in appointment and extension matters and place merit, and competence first ignoring seniority and other parameters. Appointment of Tapan Deka as DIB evidences this fact. Moreover, top sources in the power corridors reacting to this episode say that this secret battle has disturbed the decision making process of the Government and this might cost Asthana and hamper his chances of getting any post-retirement assignment.
