The Himachal Pradesh Police has set a new benchmark in policing, recently, Himachal Pradesh Police has redesigned its policing approach which is now becoming a new talk in the field of policing. Under the able leadership of Sanjay Kundu(DGP of Himachal Pradesh Police), the Himachal Pradesh Police has switched to 'predictive policing' a method which is largely followed in American policing. What is more, interesting to observe is that this model is delivering the desired results in keeping crime in check by using data assessment techniques. In a data-driven approach, the police can assess the data and predict the possibilities and rate of crime in the specific region and can accordingly deploy countermeasures, this can help to predict the occurrence of the crime and helps in the prevention of crime . According to data of NCRB for Himachal Pradesh, the total number of cases, including under IPC sections and special and local laws (SLL), stood at 18,833 in 2021, a fall of 2,000 cases from the previous year. As per Kundu, the predictive model is inspired by an idea that the New York Police Department, headed by the legendary William Bratton, started in the 1990s. Called COMPSTAT, this involved studying data to narrow down on a pattern, and plug loopholes, if any. Moreover, the total number of violent crimes, including murder, dipped to 1,762 in 2021 from 1,817 in 2020. For two years, Himachal Pradesh Police was working on this model, but in the recent past, the results are quite evident which evidences the fact that this model was a success and worth introducing into the Indian Policing System. Reacting to this development, top sources in the power corridors have said that Kundu has done a tremendous job in bringing the much-needed reform in Indian policing, other state police forces should also learn from this and try to imbibe this reform for bringing effective policing. It can also be said that this initiative of the Himachal Police, can be treated as a case of course correction in Indian policing.
