Punjab Government Goes Center's Way: Amend Rules To Take Full Powers In Appointing DGP

In a surprising move or perhaps a countermove to convey a message to the center, the Punjab Government has passed a bill amending Punjab Police Act recently in the state legislative assembly. The Punjab government has amended the act to circumvent the process laid down as per Supreme Court. With the new amendment, Punjab Government will have full powers to select and appoint DGP. This can be seen as a violation of SC guidelines but the real catch in this design can be seen if we see it politically and as said above that the idea behind this design is either to counter center's in its own games or it could also be a mere display of power to convey a message to center, top sources say. Whatever the motive behind this move, the bureaucratic implications could be decoded where the present DGP Gaurav Yadav may get full charge of the DGP. The reasons for this possible implication is also quite clear, MHA in the past few months was pinching the State government over adhoc arrangement beyond six months and this might trigger Punjab Government to come up with such a surprising move.
