The present MEA Spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi(IFS: 1995), moved to UN as India's Permanent Representative. The successor of Bagchi was not announced, along with the appointment order. Top sources say that names of a few IFS officers have started to emerge, but among them, two important names are of India's Ambassador to Mauritius Nandini Singla IFS(1997 batch) and G20 Joint Secretary Nagraj Naidu IFS(1998 batch). Top sources add that both of them are specialised and top-notch diplomats. Singla is an expert in Public Diplomacy and handled the South Asian and Europe desk and engaged with Indian diaspora briefly, top sources say, Geneva, Paris, and Dhaka are some key regions where she served. She also happens to be the spouse of Sanjeev Singla, IFS 1997 batch who is currently India's Ambassador to Israel. and also served briefly in PMO. Given Nandini Singla's stronghold in dealing with European and South Asian affairs along with Public Diplomacy, she is a strong contender for MEA Spokesperson. However, trailing her is Nagraj Naidu, IFS of 1998 batch currently serving as Joint Secretary G20. Naidu is a China specialist and speaks good Chinese, with four postings in China. He played a key role in coordinating the efforts for establishing the International Solar Alliance(ISA) and closely worked at the UN along with former MEA spokesperson Syed Akkrabuddin in the capacity of second in command. In 2019, Akrabuddin and Nagraj led impressive diplomacy at the UN blunted Pakistan and China on abrogation of Article 370. Top sources say that since there is regime change in Maurauties and New Delhi is pushing hard to find depth to manoeuvre in the recently established pro-china regime, Singla might not be called back, and if such a decision is on the cards, then Nagraj Naidu may succeed Bagchi. Whatever may be the case, both Singla and Nagraj are well read, and career diplomats are a perfect fit for MEA spokesperson.
