In a major development it has been learned from top sources that top brass of North Block is planning to enhance Delhi Police Commissioner powers making it akin to CAPF DGs. Top sources add that the Delhi Police Commissioner currently exercises his powers in accordance with Delhi Police Act. Under this act, the Commissioner enjoys wide general powers, but still has few limited powers, especially financial powers, unlike CAPF DGs. The CAPF DGs have recently been delegated financial powers by the Home Ministry, which has helped DGs of CAPF to enhance their force's capabilities and resource base especially in CRPF and BSF.
If the Commissioner's powers get an upgrade by the North Block along with a few general powers, then the Delhi Police Commissioner will have wide options for revamping the force and upgrading the force's resources, keeping the evolving threat matrix of the national security landscape. Top Sources of MHA add that the proposal is still under examination, a sign of the careful consideration being given to this significant change. If everything goes well, then the proposal may get a green signal in the near future.
