Established in 1896, the Vellore Police Training School holds the distinction of being India's first Police Training College, and quite possibly the world's first. This predates even the establishment of the Hendon Police College by the Scotland Yard, London's Metropolitan, in 1934. The visit of Tamil Nadu's Police Training Chief to this historic institution underscores its unique place in the history of policing.

The old touch in policing is one of the key reasons that the Tamil Nadu Police are a sharp investigative force. According to the India Justice Report, Tami Nadu ranked among the top 10 police forces in India and tops the list in Prison administration. Top sources say that in the past, Tamil Nadu Police has solved various complicated or clueless cases. It is perhaps a foundational touch of policing in the state that helped Tamil Nadu Police to strengthen their crime investigation and professional policing competency.

The Police Training School was established in the Vellore Fort by a Home Department notification in 1896 on the recommendations of the Inspector General of Police M Hammick, I.C.S., the Government ordered the opening of a temporary training school at Vellore for Inspectors. The Police Training School at Vellore was made a permanent institution and called Police Training College, based on the Commission's recommendations.
