The incumbent Director of India's premier investigating agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI), Praveen Sood IPS: KN: 1986 batch is set to complete his two year tenure in the next two months, the wheels for appointing the next CBI director will be set in motion soon. The top sources that this time, the pool of officers with experience working with CBI is quite substantial, covering almost most of CAPF. Beginning from DG SSB, A.M Prasad served as Joint Director in CBI,
The present DG CSIF, R.S Bhatti, served as Joint Director of the now-disbanded Multi-Disciplinary Monitoring Agency(MDMA) in the CBI. The monitoring agency was tasked with investigating the larger conspiracy behind the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
Next in line is the DG of India's elite counter-terror force, NSG Bihar cadre IPS officer of 1992 batch B. Srinivasan, who also served in CBI almost a decade ago. The BPR&D DG Rajeev Sharma IPS: 1990 batch served as Joint Director in CBI a decade back. The newly appointed BCAS DG Rajesh Nirwan IPS: 1992 batch served as DIG in CBI for two years. The National Crime Record Bureau Chief Alok Ranjan, IPS officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre, has served in CBI. From MHA, Special Secretary Internal Security Praveen Vashista IPS 1991 batch of Bihar cadre has also worked with CBI years back.
Regardless of the time factor of six months, as many promising officers are already out of the race, it is one of few rare events in power corridors where such a large number of CBI veterans serving in CAPF. The last time a CAPF boss was appointed to the CBI helm was four years ago when former CISF DG and Maharashtra DGP Subodh Jaiswal was appointed as CBI Director.
