Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of TMC leader Mamata Banerjee, has been influential in party matters following her. Along with Derek O'Brien, a prominent figure and Rajya Sabha member from TMC, efforts were made to engage three sitting BJP Members of Parliament to consider realigning with TMC, according to sources. The requests from these individuals were relatively straightforward: one sought an assembly ticket for his wife and a cabinet portfolio, another expressed a desire for compensation rather than contesting in the next election, and the third aimed to run for election, with the option of being nominated to the Rajya Sabha if unsuccessful source says. Although the terms seemed manageable.

it appears that Mamata Banerjee, affectionately known as Didi, was not in a rush to embrace these potential transitions. Meanwhile, the central leadership of BJP became aware of these developments due to the absence of the three members from significant party meetings, a lack of ground activity, and minimal communication regarding party initiatives source says. In light of this, the central leadership reached out to express concerns about possible anti-party activities. Consequently, the trio sought to re-engage with Abhishek and O'Brien to discuss the next steps. When the issue was brought to Didi's attention, she voiced her reservations, highlighting that past collaborations with PK had posed challenges for the party's prospects in Goa, Assam, and Tripura source says. She emphasized the importance of adhering to the party's strategic direction and expressed that shifting allegiances may not align with the current needs of TMC. This served as a clear reminder that any proposals require Didi's endorsement to ensure they align with the party's objectives source says.
