The Supreme Court has reached a remarkable milestone once again, as Justice B. R. Gavai was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India. As a distinguished member of the Buddhist community and the second Dalit to hold this esteemed position, Justice Gavai is renowned for his courageous decisions grounded in constitutional principles. Observers are optimistic that, despite his brief six-month term, he will deliver impactful judgments that will resonate throughout the nation. Looking ahead to 2027, Justice Nagrattna is poised to make history as the first woman to ascend to the role of Chief Justice of India.

As the most senior judge, she meets the necessary criteria for consideration by the collegium, adding to the anticipation surrounding her potential appointment. Should she take the oath, her tenure would be a mere 36 days; however, it’s worth noting that in 1991, Justice Kamal Narayan Singh served as Chief Justice for only 17 days. If Nagrattna steps into this pivotal role, her name will be forever etched in the annals of history, marking a significant breakthrough for gender representation in India's highest court source says.
