Bihar is currently experiencing a surge of political activity as the state elections draw near, causing all political parties to intensify their efforts to secure victory for their candidates in the assembly elections source says. The ruling party is particularly active, leveraging its incumbency to gain an advantage through what some critics refer to as ‘Lollipops’—initiatives and promises that aim to showcase their commitment to the state’s development. After years of stagnation, the ruling party has recently unveiled a series of significant projects, signaling their eagerness to make tangible strides in developmental initiatives. One notable development was the inauguration of the upgraded Patna Airport facilities, which included modernized terminals and enhanced passenger services.

Furthermore, plans have been announced to construct a new airport at Bihata, specifically designed to accommodate larger aircraft that the current Patna Airport cannot service directly due to size limitations source says. In addition to this, the government has expedited construction efforts at the Purnia Airport, aiming for it to start functioning by September. A number of previously stalled issues have been resolved, while others remain on the table, with suggestions for alternative solutions to be explored in the future source says. The rapid pace at which these projects are being executed has left many residents astonished. There is a growing skepticism regarding the ruling party's motives, as people wonder why such momentum is only apparent in the lead-up to elections, believing it to be a calculated effort to rebrand themselves as a development-focused party after years of perceived inaction source says.

Moreover, the government has announced plans to establish new airports in cities including Muzaffarpur, Birpur, Saharsa, Madhubani, Munger, and Balmikinagar, with promises of investing thousands of crores to improve air connectivity in the state. However, critical voices among political analysts and citizens alike highlight a disconnect between these initiatives and the basic travel needs of the populace. Many express doubt about how voters could feasibly take advantage of air travel when the state lacks adequate railinfrastructure, which hampers their ability to access jobs outside their region source says. Critics dismiss these airport projects as electoral gimmicks designed to distract voters from more pressing issues.

They argue that what truly would benefit the state's youth and economy are investments in agro-based food production, ready-to-eat and drink packaging and manufacturing units, the establishment of fertilizer manufacturing plants, machinery manufacturing sectors, and the creation of Information Technology hubs. These initiatives, they argue, could provide sustainable employment opportunities for the younger generation instead of short-term political gains source says.
