Following their decisive victory in the recent state elections, both parties carefully considered their options for forming a government. The BJP, securing 89 seats, and the JD(U), with 85 seats, hoped to garner support from like-minded parties and coalition partners to secure a majority. However, both parties were firm on retaining the Chief Ministership and key portfolios, leading to serious negotiations. According to sources, this stalemate prompted both sides to explore alternative strategies. To break the deadlock, a late-night flight was arranged from Patna to Delhi, carrying senior leaders of the JD(U), Sanjay Jha, Lallan Singh, and Nitish Kumar's close confidant.
Upon arrival, they immediately proceeded to a high-level meeting with a senior BJP leader, as reported by sources familiar with the matter.. During the meeting, a consensus was reached that Nitish Kumar would serve as the Chief Minister for the initial period of two and a half years. After this period, the BJP would claim the Chief Ministership, and Nitish Kumar would be accommodated in a constitutional position such as the President or Vice President of India. This agreement was communicated to Nitish Kumar, who endorsed the arrangement, and the coalition formation was subsequently formalised. Nitish Kumar is expected to adhere to this prearranged formula, as per the understanding reached between the parties.
