In an interesting reshuffle in Delhi Police, the Intelligence chief Satish Golcha was sent to head the Prisons department, but the successor took over with an interesting set of responsibilities. Sagar Preet Hooda, who was heading the Operations and Media Cell, has been tasked with handling the Intelligence affairs of Delhi Police but with an additional charge of Media Cell. Intelligence and media do not fit together, but at a localised level, such as in the police force, media can be harnessed well to cultivate Delhi Police's Intelligence capabilities. "Sagar is a person who has the capacity to have a wise sense of the situation and can handle this complex affair", a top source said.
As the Delhi Police faces a landscape filled with challenges and uncertainty in the coming times, it needs a robust network of vigilance to enhance its capabilities of preventive policing. In 2021, the Los Angeles Police Department(LAPD) demonstrated the power of media and Intelligence relationship as a robust tool for intel collection. This strategic use of media not only aided in crime prediction and prevention but also significantly enhanced their understanding and control of the cybercrime world. This success story serves as a beacon of inspiration for the Delhi Police, highlighting the potential benefits of media integration in policing.
The current scenario underscores the urgent need for the Delhi Police to develop high 'situational awareness', a crucial aspect that can only be nurtured by expanding its scope beyond traditional and basic professional policing, as emphasized by a top source in the security establishment. The LAPD model offers valuable lessons for the Delhi Police, but what is paramount for the force is to recognize the potential of this complex relationship between Media and Intelligence. By exploring and harnessing this relationship, the Delhi Police can build more advanced capabilities and policing methods.
